CONSTRUCTION OF A PEDESTRIAN OVERPASS AT YEREVAN’S KHANJYAN-TUMANYAN INTERSECTION AIMS TO INCREASE FOOT-TRAFFIC SAFETY

NEW YORK, New York — In an effort to help address the issue of foot-traffic safety in the Armenian capitol, the Armenia Fund is building a pedestrian overpass at the crossing of Khanjyan and Tumanyan Streets, one of Yerevan’s busiest intersections. The project, which is being implemented jointly with the Yerevan Municipality, was sponsored by Armenia Fund USA (benefactor Hirair Hovnanian).

Construction crews are hard at work digging trenches for the twenty-five meters long overpass, a welcome and necessary relief for the multitudes crossing the Khanjyan-Tumanyan intersection every day

To date, the foundation for the structure has been laid and currently crews are constructing the pillars. Two-and-a-half meters wide and twenty-five meters long, the overpass will feature ample lighting, gutters, and tiled floors, providing a safe means to navigate an area that is frequented by commuters and families alike.

“Unfortunately, many of the capitol’s basic problems have yet to be resolved,” said Ara Vardanyan, executive director of the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund. “The construction of the overpass at the crossing of Khanjyan and Tumanyan Streets is a much-needed endeavor, the type of initiative that will help significantly enhance people’s experience of central Yerevan. I am confident that the overpass will go a long way in improving pedestrian safety by preventing accidents involving pedestrians.”

It is noteworthy that Hirair Hovnanian also sponsors the construction of an orphanage in Shushi, which is currently in its initial phases.
